by Sara Donatello
Maxime Germain (Chamonix-Mont Blanc, FRA) took to the course in Oberhof, GER with a head of steam and it paid off. Starting the men’s 12.5km pursuit back in bib 47, +2:01.6 off the leader, Germain shot a near perfect 19 for 20 to finish 22nd overall, a 25-spot jump from his start position.
The biggest mover in the field, Germain posted a top-10 performance to make up 28.8 seconds and finish +1:37.8 behind the pursuit victor Sturla Holm Laegreid of Norway. Both Boe brothers joined Laegreid on the podium to make it a Norwegian sweep, Tarjei Boe in second and Johannes Thinges Boe in third.
Teammate Campbell Wright (Wanaka, NZL/Waiorau Nordic Skiing) began the race in ninth and held a top five position until the final shooting stage where he dropped two shot, which ultimately landed him fifteenth overall. Vincent Bonacci (Salt Lake City, UT/Team Crosscut) bounced back from four misses in his three shooting stages to clean his final standing shoot and cross the finish line in 52nd, two spots higher than his start position.
The final day of racing in Oberhof will see Wright and Chloe Levins (Williston, VT/Unaffiliated) race the single mixed relay, set to begin at 06:20 EST/12:20 CET, and Bonacci, Vaclav Cervenka (Grand Rapids, MN/Army World Class Athlete Program), Grace Castonguay (Jackson, NH/Craftsbury Green Racing Project), and Jackie Garso (Lake Clear, NY/Craftsbury Green Racing Project) team up for the mixed relay to follow at 08:30 EST/14:30 CET.
