Van started downhill skiing as soon as he could walk. He began Nordic ski racing when he was around 10 years old and, living in Lake Placid, saw the U.S. Biathlon Team training at Mt Van Hoevenberg and around town. A couple years later, he tried a bit of shooting with New York Ski Education Foundation (NYSEF) and later joined a biathlon camp with Algis Shalna. Currently, Van competes for the Crosscut Elite Team in Bozeman, Montana, and attends Montana State University where he is studying chemical engineering with a focus in pre-med. Van's idol and biggest influencer is Tim Burke and his favorite venue to race at so far in his career is his home track at Mt Van Hoevenberg.
Outside of biathlon, Van enjoys downhill and backcountry skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, live music and mountain running.
